Garment steamer watts and heat-up time: 23 models compared

Watts, heat-up time, tank size, steam time per fill and steam output for 23 current garment steamers from Rowenta, Steamfast, Hamilton Beach, Jiffy, each from the maker's own page.

The short answer

Most handheld garment steamers are rated to heat up in 15 to 45 seconds and most uprights in 45 seconds, by their makers' own figures. The fastest stated are the Rowenta Pure Pop (1,150 W) and Pure Force (1,875 W) at 15 seconds; Hamilton Beach states 45 seconds for its 1,200 W 11557, so watts alone do not predict the wait. One tank lasts 4 to 27 minutes on a handheld and 35 to 63 minutes on an upright. Watts run from 600 W (Jiffy eSteam) to 1,875 W.

5 rows carry two different figures on the same maker page; the note says which one we show. Rowenta's Pro Style page, for example, gives 52 oz and 51 oz for the same tank and both 50 and 35 minutes per fill (Rowenta).

Watts vs heat-up: what the makers' numbers show

Same or similar wattage, three times the stated wait. Heat-up depends on how much water the heater warms before steam comes out, which the makers do not state. Jiffy's commercial J-4000 heats a 1 gallon boiler to a standby temperature first and then steams for 1 hour 45 minutes per fill. If you steam one shirt before work, the stated heat-up matters most; for a closet of clothes, steam time per fill matters more.

Watts do matter for your outlet. 1,800 W at 120 V is 15 amps, the full rating of a standard 15 amp circuit, and 7 steamers here are rated 1,700 W or more. Do not run one on the same circuit as a hair dryer or space heater. Our space heaters per circuit page explains circuit limits.

Next step

Pick by your session, not the wattage: a 15 to 30 second heat-up for quick touch-ups, 30 minutes or more per fill if you steam a week of clothes at once. Then check the exact model number on the listing matches the row here.

Common questions

How long does a garment steamer take to heat up?

By the makers' own figures, 15 to 45 seconds for most handhelds and 45 seconds for most uprights. The fastest stated are the Rowenta Pure Pop and Pure Force at 15 seconds. Hamilton Beach states 45 seconds for its 11557 handheld and its 3-in-1 steamer irons. Jiffy says its eSteam and J-2000 produce steam in 1 minute, and its commercial J-4000 takes up to 15 minutes to reach standby temperature.

Does a higher wattage steamer heat up faster?

Not reliably, going by the makers' figures. The Rowenta Pure Pop is 1150 W and states 15 seconds; the Hamilton Beach 11557 is 1200 W and states 45. The Rowenta Pure Force is 1875 W at 15 seconds, while the 1700 W Hamilton Beach Durathon states 45. Wattage tells you more about the load on your circuit than about the wait.

How many watts is a garment steamer?

600 to 1875 W across the 23 models here: 600 W for the Jiffy eSteam travel steamer up to 1875 W for the Rowenta Pure Force steamer irons. Most uprights are 1,500 to 1,800 W. On a 120 V circuit, 1,800 W is 15 amps, so a big steamer and a hair dryer on one 15 amp circuit can trip it.

How long does one tank last?

Handhelds: 4 minutes for the Rowenta Pure Pop and Origin up to 27 minutes for the Hamilton Beach 3-in-1 steamer irons. Uprights: 35 to 63 minutes, the longest being the Steamfast SF-520 at 63 minutes on a 70 oz tank. Jiffy's commercial J-4000 states 1 hour 45 minutes on 1 gallon.

Method

  1. Steamers. Every garment steamer currently sold on the US sites of Rowenta, Steamfast, Hamilton Beach, Jiffy whose product page we could read, one page at a time, on 22 October 2026. Steam ironing boards and steam presses are left out. Steamfast's SF-452 and SF-562 pages say they are discontinued, so they are not in the table. Conair's site refused our reader, so Conair is not included yet.
  2. Figures. Copied as stated, from the specification table where the page has one. Where one page gives two figures for the same thing, we show the specification table figure and say so in the note. Heat-up and steam time are maker claims, not our measurements.
  3. Conversions. 1 US fl oz = 29.57 ml; 1 gallon = 128 fl oz. Rows we converted say so in the note.
  4. Not covered. How well each steamer removes wrinkles, spitting, noise or durability. We did not test any steamer.
