What does a printed page really cost? Compare ink cartridges and tanks by cost per page, from manufacturer prices and ISO page yields.

The short answer
Cost per page is the ink price divided by its rated page yield. Small cartridges cost the most per page: 15.00¢ for the HP 67XL (high yield, black). Ink tank bottles cost the least: 0.28¢ for the Epson 502 ink bottle (cyan). If you print more than a few pages a week, the running cost matters more than the printer price.

Common questions
How do you calculate printer ink cost per page?
Divide the cartridge or bottle price by its rated page yield. A $35.99 cartridge rated for 240 pages costs about 15 cents a page. Rated yields use the ISO/IEC 24711 test page at about 5% coverage, so real documents with images usually cost more.
Are ink tank printers cheaper to run?
By rated yield, yes, by a wide margin. In our data the Epson 502 ink bottle (cyan) works out at 0.28¢ a page, against 15.00¢ for the HP 67XL (high yield, black). Tank printers cost more to buy, so the saving depends on how much you print.
Is the high-yield cartridge worth it?
Usually. Brother lists the LC401 black at $17.99 for 200 pages and the LC401XL at $38.29 for 500 pages, which lowers the cost per page from about 9.0 to 7.7 cents.
