IP67 vs IPX7 speakers: what the rating actually means

IP67 and IPX7 share the same immersion water test under IEC 60529. The difference is dust. Floating is a separate claim. How to read speaker ratings before you buy.

The short answer

IPX7 and IP67 use the same water digit (7): temporary immersion under IEC 60529 test conditions, typically up to 1 metre for 30 minutes. IP67 also certifies dust-tight (6). The X in IPX7 means no dust rating was declared. Neither rating means the speaker floats.

How to read an IP code

An IP code has two digits after “IP”:

  1. First digit (solids / dust): 0–6, or X if not rated.
  2. Second digit (water): 0–9, or X if not rated.

So:

Rating Dust Water (digit 7)
IP67 Dust-tight (6) Immersion test (7)
IPX7 Not declared (X) Immersion test (7)
IP65 Dust-tight (6) Water jets (5), not immersion

Definitions follow IEC 60529 as summarised by manufacturer support pages such as Bang & Olufsen’s IP explainer.

What shoppers get wrong

  • “Waterproof” on the box is marketing. The IP code is the checkable claim.
  • Poolside use still depends on seals, ports and whether the maker allows chlorinated or salt water. The standard immersion test is fresh water under lab conditions.
  • Floating is not part of IP67/IPX7. If you need a speaker that floats, the product page must say it floats.

What to do before you buy

  1. Find the exact IP code on the maker’s page, not only a retailer bullet.
  2. Match it to your use: showers and pool edges need immersion ratings (7+); dusty worksites care about the first digit.
  3. Check warranty language for water damage. Some warranties exclude liquid damage even when an IP rating is advertised.

FAQ

Is IP67 better than IPX7?

For dust, yes if you need a declared dust-tight rating. For water digit 7, they are the same class of immersion test.

Is IP68 always better than IP67?

Digit 8 is a tougher immersion condition defined by the manufacturer under the standard’s framework, but you must read the depth and time they claim. Do not assume every IP68 product beats every IP67 product in your use case without those details.
