Cost to charge an EV at home per month: every state, every 2026 EV

Monthly home charging cost for 80 current electric models in every US state, from EPA kWh per 100 miles and EIA electricity prices for July 2026.

EPA consumption figures from fueleconomy.gov and EIA state prices for July 2026. We have not measured any car ourselves. How we research | How links work

The short answer

About $55 a month for a 2026 Tesla Model Y Standard RWD (18in Wheels) (24 kWh per 100 miles, EPA) at the US average of 18.31 cents per kWh, if you drive 1,250 miles a month. The most efficient Chevrolet Equinox EV comes to about $71 (31 kWh) and the most efficient Silverado EV to about $110 (48 kWh). Your state matters as much as the car: the same Model Y costs about $38 in Louisiana and $144 in Hawaii.

Every 2026 electric model, cost per month

EPA's combined kWh per 100 miles for each model, most efficient version first, and the monthly cost at 1,250 miles in three places: the US average (18.31¢), the cheapest state (Louisiana, 12.72¢) and the dearest (Hawaii, 48¢). The median model uses 33 kWh per 100 miles in its most efficient version. Model year 2026, or 2027 where EPA has no 2026 entry.

The monthly cost of 1,250 miles in a 2026 Tesla Model Y Standard RWD (18in Wheels) at each state's average residential price for July 2026. For another car, multiply by its kWh per 100 miles and divide by 24.

Next step

Find your price per kWh on your last bill and ask your utility whether it has an EV or time-of-use rate. Then put that price and your own miles into the calculator above.

Common questions

Why 1,250 miles a month?

It is 15,000 miles a year, the distance EPA uses for the annual fuel cost on every new car label. Type your own miles into the calculator; the cost scales in a straight line.

Which price should I use, the state average or my bill?

Your bill, if you have it. Divide the energy charges by the kWh used to get your own price per kWh and type it in. The state figures are EIA averages for all residential customers in July 2026, so a time-of-use or EV rate can be well below them.

Why does the same model have two numbers?

Each model comes in several versions. Bigger wheels, all-wheel drive and more power usually raise the kWh per 100 miles. The low figure is the most efficient version EPA lists, the high figure the least efficient.

Does this include public fast charging?

No. It is home charging at residential prices. Public fast chargers set their own prices, so check the price on the charger or its app.

Method

 1. Consumption. The combined kWh per 100 miles (field combE) from the fueleconomy.gov data file dated 29 September 2026, for every all-electric vehicle of model year 2026, or 2027 where a model has no 2026 entry. Rounded to whole kWh, as on the label. Low and high are the most and least efficient versions of each model.
 2. Miles. 1,250 a month, which is the 15,000 miles a year EPA uses on the label.
 3. Price. EIA average residential price per state for July 2026, from Electric Power Monthly Table 5.6.A.
 4. Cost. kWh per 100 miles times miles divided by 100, times the price. The EPA figure is used as it is, with no extra allowance added.
 5. Not covered. Public charging, time-of-use and EV rates, fixed monthly charges, cold weather and fast driving. We did not test any car.
