Heated mattress pad and electric blanket cost per night, vs a space heater

What a heated mattress pad, electric blanket or heated throw costs per night in every US state, from maker-stated watts, next to a space heater on high and low.

Calculated from EIA prices and the wattage Sunbeam states on its own product pages. We have not metered these products ourselves. How we research | How links work

The short answer

About 16.1¢ a night for a heated mattress pad and 14.6¢ for an electric blanket, running 8 hours at the US average of 18.31 cents per kWh (EIA, July 2026). Sunbeam states 110 W for its current mattress pad and 100 W for its blankets and throws. A 1,500 W space heater on high costs $2.20 for the same 8 hours, 15 times as much. Even in Hawaii, the dearest state, a blanket night is 38.4¢.

The comparison is power, not comfort. A heater warms the air in the room; a blanket or pad warms you. If you need the room warm, the blanket does not replace the heater.

Recall check

We searched the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall list for recalls since 1 January 2025 with "blanket" or "mattress pad" in the title. None names a Sunbeam product. These heated blankets were recalled:

The other matches were sauna blankets. Search your own product on cpsc.gov/Recalls.

Method

  1. Watts. The wattage on each Sunbeam product page's specification list, read by hand on 17 October 2026. We left out three Sunbeam mattress pad pages that search engines still show but that no longer load on sunbeamhome.com.
  2. Price. EIA Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A, residential price by state, July 2026.
  3. Cost. watts / 1,000 x hours x price per kWh. Example: 100 W x 8 h = 0.8 kWh; 0.8 x $0.1831 = 14.6 cents.
  4. Limits. Rated watts are the maximum. The cost at lower settings is lower, by an amount the makers do not publish.

Next step

Two sleepers who want different warmth need two controllers, which on a queen or king pad may double the draw. Check the controller label for the watts per side before you compare.

Common questions

How much does a heated mattress pad cost to run per night?

Sunbeam rates its current heated mattress pad at 110 W. Eight hours at that rating is 0.88 kWh, 16.1¢ at the US average of 18.31 cents per kWh (EIA, July 2026). If the two controllers on a queen or king each draw 110 W, double it with both sides on.

Is an electric blanket cheaper than a space heater?

Much cheaper to run. A 100 W Sunbeam blanket uses 15 times less power than a 1,500 W heater on high: 14.6¢ against $2.20 for 8 hours at the US average. The blanket warms you, not the room, so it only replaces the heater if you are in bed or on the sofa.

Do heated blankets use their full wattage all night?

The rated wattage is the most the product is built to draw. Lower settings and the controller switching the heat on and off use less, so the costs here are an upper limit for the hours you count.

Why are only Sunbeam products in the table?

We list a product only when its maker states the wattage on its own website. Sunbeam does that on every heated bedding page we read. The other brands we checked either publish no wattage on their own site or block automated readers, so we could not confirm a figure.
