Sony says a 3-minute charge gives up to 3 hours of playback with a USB PD adapter, which is useful at a gate.

Bose includes a 3.5 mm to 2.5 mm audio cable in the box, so it is ready for seatback screens with an airline adapter where needed. For AirPods Max 2, check your cable before you travel: they connect by Bluetooth and USB-C. Whatever you buy, test the wired connection at home before the trip.

Which is most comfortable on a long trip?

Weight is the one objective number: Sony about 254 g, Bose about 264 g, AirPods Max 2 386.2 g. A gap of over 120 g is noticeable over a 12-hour flight. Clamping force, ear-cup space and glasses also matter, so try them on if you can and buy where returns are easy.

Are the older models still a good buy?

The Sony WH-1000XM5 and first-generation Bose QC Ultra can still be found, sometimes discounted. Sony rates the XM5 at the same 30 hours as the XM6, and Bose rated the first-generation Ultra at up to 24 hours. If the older model is much cheaper, it can be the better value.
