The short answer
Go by room size. Levoit's comparison chart rates the Core 300 for 219 sq ft and the Core 400S for 403 sq ft. The 400S costs $219.99 against $99.99, and adds app control and a PM2.5 display. For a bedroom, the Core 300 is enough. For an open living area, the 400S is the one sized for it.

Levoit’s Core 300 product page gives a slightly different room figure (222 sq ft at 4.8 air changes an hour) and weight (7.9 lb). We use the chart here so both models are measured the same way.
When the Core 300 wins
Bedrooms and home offices. It costs less than half as much and takes up less floor space.
When the Core 400S wins
Rooms above about 220 sq ft, or when you want to check air quality and change settings from your phone.
