Nespresso Vertuo vs Original: which should you buy?

Choose the coffee you want to drink before choosing a Nespresso machine. Original and Vertuo use different capsule systems, so the purchase also determines which capsules you will keep buying.

Nespresso describes Original as its espresso-focused system, using a 19-bar pressure extraction process. Vertuo reads a capsule barcode to adjust brewing parameters and covers a wider range of drink sizes across its machine family. That does not mean every Vertuo machine accepts every Vertuo format.

What do you usually drink?

If your daily drink begins with an espresso, compare Original machines first. The Essenza Mini is one example: its documented features include a 0.6-liter tank and 19-bar pump. A compact machine can be a sensible fit when you do not need a large reservoir or integrated milk system.

If you prefer a longer cup from a single capsule, inspect Vertuo’s capsule options and then check which machine supports them. The VertuoPlus offers barcode recognition, a motorized brew head and a movable tank. These are convenience features, not evidence that its coffee tastes better.

Does your machine accept every capsule?

The VertuoPlus manual excludes XL Alto/Cold Brew and XL Carafe capsules. A comparison page showing the full Vertuo family can therefore be misleading if you assume its largest drinks work on Plus.

Likewise, verify the precise model and bundle. A milk frother shown in a retailer photograph may be part of a bundle rather than the base machine. Machine shapes, dimensions and included accessories differ between versions and markets.

What does a normal month of coffee cost?

Look up the current local price of capsules you would actually drink. Multiply the per-capsule cost by your expected daily use, then by 30. Include extra capsules for stronger drinks, milk if relevant, and the cost of a separate frother if you want one.

This makes a machine discount easier to judge. Saving at checkout matters less if your chosen drinks cost more every week. Availability also matters: check how convenient it is to replenish the capsules and how local recycling works.
